A Genealogical History of the Montgomery's and Their Descendants by David B Montgomery, 1903:
The first record we have of this family dates back and prior to 1643. Gabriel Gustave Crocketagni lived at that time in the south of France. His son, Antoine Peronnett de Crocketagni, was born at Montauban, France, 10 Jul 1643. In 1664, Gabriel Crocketagni, obtained for his son, a position in the house of Louis XIV. Antoine was one of the handsomest young man in the south of France, an excellent horseman, and devoted to his calling. By his fine appearance and love of duty, he drew the personal attention of the king, who was anxious to retain him in his service and made him second in command of the household guards.
The family was originally Catholic, but was converted to Protestantism (French Huguenots). In 1669, Antoine was married to Louise de Saix (through this marriage, the Crocketts are connected to the Marquis de LaFayette, his mother having been a Miss De Saix - Louise's cousin). Soon after their marriage, he resigned his commission and removed to Bordeaux, where he entered the merchants' service of the Fontaines and Maurys who had the monopoly of the wine and salt trade in the south of France.
Antoine's first child, Gabriel Gustave, was born at Bordeaux on 12 Oct 1672. In that year, the Bishop of Lyons, through the king, ordered all heretics (Huguenots) to leave the south of France within 20 days! They took up their abode in Ireland near Bantry Bay, where the following children were born to them (and they changed their surname to Crockett):

Joseph Louis/9 Jan 1676
Robert Watkins/18 Jul 1678
Louise de Saix/15 Mar 1680
