Bailey served in the Confederate Army during the War Between The States He enlisted April 17, 1861 in Staunton, Virginia and was mustered into service at Harper's Ferry, May 1, 1861. He was present with his unit, the 5th Virginia Infantry, Co. C - Mountain Guard, at First Manassas (Bull Run), second Manassas and Kernstown. He was promoted to Corporal in December 1861, and was promoted again to 2nd Sergeant on April 16, 1862. He was a member of Captain J. M. Trery's Company C, commanded by Colonel J. H. S. Funk. He died of wounds received at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 3, 1863 the last day of the battle. His body was retrieved and brought back to Union Presbyterian Cemetery by his family.
