Virgil "Pete" Donis England, 79, of Walla Walla passed away Friday, April 15, 2005, at St. Mary's Hospital in Walla Walla.
Pete was born Feb. 10, 1926 in Coal, Henry Co., Mo. to Ervin Elijah England and Freda Mae Waisner England.
Pete attended school in Missouri and came to Washington State in 1942-43 with his family settling in the Sunnyside area. On Aug. 14, 1947 he married Betty Prescott at Prosser. Making their home in Sunnyside and then moving to Grandview. In those years of being in Grandview, one of Pete's favorite things to do for recreation was to race jalopies at the Sunny-Grand Speedway, bringing home numerous trophies. He worked many years on the power supply projects at Hanford and then the Snake River Dams, which brought him to the Dayton area.
He was a charter member of the Teamster's local 839 in Pasco, retiring after 35 years in 1982.
Pete and Betty moved to Touchet in 1978. While making their home there, he enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, and square dancing with the High Stepper Square dancing club. Pete and Betty moved to Walla Walla in 1992, due to ill health, where they continued their retirement. He enjoyed playing cards at the Walla Walla Senior Center.
He is survived by his wife Betty, of Walla Walla; four children, Cherie (Mike) Morrow of Sunnyside, Daniel (Susan) England of Prescott, Ted (Debbie) England of Seattle, and Cindi (Sean) Casseday of Dayton; and nine grandchildren, Chad England, Matt Morrow, Kylee Morrow, Jackie Morrow, Sydney England, Kelsey England, Casey Casseday, April Casseday, and Connor Casseday.He is also survived by brothers, Lee England of Woodland, Calif., Farriel England of Riverside, Calif.; sisters, Alma (Gerri) Golden of Sunnyside, Louise Schlosser of Port Angeles, and Dora Baldwin of Prosser; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Pauline England; and two brothers, Junior England and Bill England.
Herring Groseclose Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
