As a center fielder, he made his debut with the Philadelphia Athletics on September 24, 1908. For seventeen seasons, he played with the Philadelphia Athletics (1908-17, 1920, 1924), Boston Red Sox (1918-19) and Chicago White Sox in (1922-23). In three seasons he hit over .300, averaged 20 stolen bases per season, five times he led American League outfielders in fielding percentage and played in five World Series with the Athletics (1910-11, 1913-14) and Red Sox in 1918. He ended his career with 1418 hits, 15 homes, 530 runs batted in, a .284 batting average, 185 stolen bases and a .980 fielding percentage.
