Harold Thomas Chittum, 82, of 528 Locust Ave., died Friday night in a Staunton nursing home. He was born March 25, 1894, at Timber Ridge, Rockbridge Co, VA, a son of the late William McClanaham and Nora Alice Swope Chittum.
He was educated at VA Military Institute and served in the U.S. Army from August 1917 to January 1925. He retired from the DuPont Co. in 1959, where he had worked from construction to personnel section superintendent to specialist assistant to the manager. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and had served in various civic affairs.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Cornelia Johnson Chittum; two sons, David H. Chittum of Martinsville, and Harold T. Chittum Jr., of Orlando, FL.; one brother, L. B. Chittum of Staunton; one sister, Mrs. Phillip Gorman of Staunton; and five grandchildren.
A graveside funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton, conducted by the Rev. G. P. Whiteley. Hamrick Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
