Best known for penning the New York City gang-based novel "The Warriors", for which was made into a 1979 cult film adaptation. Born to Jewish immigrants whom were politically-inclined, he served as a surgical technician during World War II. Upon returning to civilian life, he studied Literature at New York University and later landed a position with New York City Welfare Department. By the early 1960s, Yurick was writing full-time and yielded "The Warriors", a modernization of the story by the Greek writer Xenophon's "Anabasis". This was followed by "Fertig" (1966), the story of a father overly-obsessed with revenge against those whom committed malpractice which resulted in his son's death. The 1999 motion picture "The Confession" was based on the novel. Further works include "The Bag" (1968), Someine Just Like You" (1972) and "An Island Death" (1975). He died of complications from lung cancer. (bio by: C.S.)
