Edward C. Burke, 87, ex-pro hockey player:- Monday, October 5, 1992

Edward C. Burke, 87, of 54 Oak St., a professional hockey player for 15 years and a retired 44-year sales division head for CCM, died Saturday in Providence Hospital in Holyoke.

He played for the Boston Bruins and the New York Americans and retired in 1963 from CCM, after serving the entire eastern region.

He was New York's leading scorer during the 1933-34 season and also was involved in the longest hockey game in professional hockey. While playing for the Boston Tigers (the Bruins' farm club), he scored the tying goal in the third period against the Springfield Indians. The game lasted nine hours, ending at 4:00 a.m. in a 2-2 tie.

He was also a referee in both the American Hockey League and the National Hockey League for over 16 years. He was responsible for bringing hockey to many areas of the country that did not have any exposure to the game.

He served as the golf professional for the former Stonehedge Country Club in Syracuse, N.Y., during the late 1930s and early '40s.

Born in Toronto, Canada, he lived in New York State before moving to West Springfield in 1950.

He was a veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force where he served as bush pilot in the Hudson Bay area. He was a member of the West Springfield Lions Club. He was a communicant of St. Thomas Church.

His wife, the former Doris E. Binns, died in 1985. He leaves a son, Police Chief Thomas E. Burke, with whom he lived; a brother, J. Frank Burke of Concord; two sisters, Blanche Metzger of Rochester, N.Y., and Marian Turner of Toronto; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday morning at the Toomey-O'Brien Funeral Home and in the church, with burial in the parish cemetery. Calling hours are this afternoon and evening.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Thomas Church Organ Campaign, 47 Pine St., West Springfield, 01089.
