Chester grew up in Port Angeles, Washington, where he worked in his family owned business (Baker Furniture and Hardware Co.) and became half owner. Port Angeles is where he met and married his wife "Edith McKee". They were married June 10, 1906. On April 8, 1915, J. M. Haynes bought out his interest in the store. Chester and Edith moved to Seattle, Washington in May 1915, where Chester operated a streetcar. In 1923 they moved to Bremerton where he went to work in the Bremerton Navy Yard. He retired in 1951. While working as a carpenter, Chester died of a heart attack on July 16, 1956, at the age of 70, just one month after celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered.
Chester and Edith had six children; Darl Bitner, Gladys, Jeanette Mable, Donald Merton, Doris Irene and Neil Thomas (Tommy).
