Son of Daniel Rowland and Lucy (Prouty) Knight.
On 12 Jul 1861 Daniel, a shoemaker, mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of North Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was 26 years, 1 month and 29 days old.
On 9 Sep 1861 Daniel was promoted to and commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant.
He was declared missing in action on 21 Oct 1861 at The Battle of Ball's Bluff, Leesburg, Virginia.
On 20 Nov 1861 in the "Worcester Daily Spy," Worcester, Massachusetts, Daniel was listed among the prisoners taken at Ball's Bluff.
On 28 Jul 1864 Daniel ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts due to expiration of term of service, as 1st Lieutenenat of Co. D.
On 20 Jun 1866 Daniel, 31, married Frances Marion Wood, 26, daughter of Gorham Hussy and Lucy (Dodge) Wood, at North Brookfield, Massachusetts, in a first marriage for both. They had no children of their own. However, Esther M. McQuestion, daughter of Frederick S. and Isa L. (Gerow) McQuestion, was adopted on 4 Sep 1883 at Worcester County, Massachusetts, and her name changed to Esther Isabel Knight by decree.
In 1890 at Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts, Daniel was a member of the Ferdinand Dexter G. A. R., Post 38.
Daniel died on 21 Dec 1891 at North Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts, of typhoid fever. He was 56 years, 7 months and 8 days old.

"The funeral of Lieut. Daniel W. Knight was held Wednesday at 1:30. Mr. Knight was born in North Brookfield May 13, 1835, and has lived nearly his whole life here. In 1861 he enlisted for three years in the 15th regiment, Co. F., M. V., and was in the battle of Balls Bluff and was taken prisoner there. He was in the battles of Antietam and Fredericksburg and was discharged at the expiration of service, July, 1864. He leaves a widow and one child."
On 26 Oct 1904 Daniel's daughter, Esther Isabel Knight married Charles Royal Varney at North Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts, in a first marriage for both.
