Youngstown - Nancy Elizabeth Backus, 94, died December 31, 2012 at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Mrs. Backus was born February 4, 1918 in Syracuse, New York, a daughter of Clair and Janet Miller.

She received a B.S. in Medical Technologies from the University of Toledo. Nancy was a homemaker and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown. She served on the YWCA board, was a member of the Kiwanis Queen and the PTA in Poland, and was a girl scout leader.
Nancy was an avid bridge player, enjoyed playing golf, and was famous for her cookies.

Nancy and her husband Tom resided in Sanford, North Carolina for 23 years after his retirement from dentistry, before moving back to the area in 2004.
Tom, whom she married September 11, 1943, died February 2, 2010.


She leaves two daughters, Joanne (James) Bryson of New Middletown and Rosemary (Robert) Himes of Corpus Christi, TX; one son, Thomas H. (Georgia) Backus Jr. of Poland; grandchildren, Thomas H. (Beth) Backus III, Jamye (fiance, Matthew Soffer) Backus, Craig (Rebecca) Alexander,Celeste (Matthew) Bradshaw, Kristina Himes, Jerry (Tracy)Bryson, Terri (Tim) Kilgore, Sherri Lawrence; and great-grandchildren, Thomas H. Backus IV and Katelyn Bryson.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Janet Massatelli.

Interment will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
