Bryan Stoltenberg, a professional American football player, has passed away. He was 40.

Bryan recently underwent several surgeries after being in a car accident last month, the school said on its website. He died Friday at his home in Sugarland, Texas.

Bryan earned consensus first-team All-American honors at center as a University of Colorado senior in 1995 and was a two-time, first-team All-Big Eight performer (1994, 1995). As a senior, he was one of 10 semifinalists for the Lombardi Award. He was a sixth-round draft choice by the San Diego Chargers in the 1996 National Football League draft and went on to play in 50 career NFL games with the Chargers (1996), New York Giants (1997) and Carolina Panthers (1998-2000).

Bryan suited up for three seasons under Bill McCartney and another for Rick Neuheisel. With Stoltenberg helping to pave the way, Rashaan Salaam rushed for a school-record 2,055 yards in 1994 and won the Heisman Trophy.

Bryan passed away on January 4, 2013 in Sugar Land TX from injuries sustained in a traffic collision. He is survived by his wife, Laura, and three sons.
