The daughter of English immigrants, Mrs. Smith was an Oregon pioneer of 1842 who crossed the plains with her husband and seven children. Mrs. Smith was apparently a strong and capable person. When her husband died she was left with the responsibility of running a large farm and with several children still living at home, the youngest being twelve years old.It is said she spent many hours in the chimney corner smoking a little pipe. She lived to the age of 93.
