"John M.P. O'Malley, 92, of 414 Chestnut St., the dean of city lawyers, died in Mercy Hospital on Tuesday.

He was a federal and state court lawyer, and operated a law practice on Elm Street.

He started teaching law at Western New England College in 1946, and taught contract law for more than 20 years.

Born in Clinton, he lived here most of his life. He was the city's most senior practicing attorney.

He received a law degree in 1932 from Western New England Law School, when it was a branch of Northeastern University. He passed the bar on Nov. 4, 1932, and was admitted into the U.S. Courts in 1935.

He received an honorary doctor of law degree from Western New England College in 1974.

He taught at the American Institute of Banking, and served on the Selective Service Board here in World War II.

O'Malley was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Church, and a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Hibernians.

His wife, the former Mary Manning, died in 1986. His brother was the late District Court Judge Thomas J. O'Malley.

The decedent leaves a daughter, Carol O. Stanley of Suffield, Conn.; a brother, Joseph B. of Centerville; two sisters, Mary Keating of Worcester and Sister Lourdes O'Malley of the Presentation Order in Fitchburg; three grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

The funeral will be on Friday morning at Sampson's Chapel of the Acres Funeral Home and the church, with burial in St. Michael's Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Thursday afternoon and evening.

Memorial contributions may be made to the John M.P. O'Malley Scholarship Fund, in care of Western New England College's Office of Institutional Advancement at 215 Wilbraham Road, Springfield, 01119."
