HODGE, PRUDENCE H. - Prudence H. Hodge, 88, a 27 year resident of Somers and formerly of Chappaqua, NY, died on April 28, 2006 at Northern Westchester Hospital. Prudence was born on March 2, 1918 in Buffalo, NY to Sarah Preston Hemenway andThomas Shackelford Hemenway. She was a High School English teacher for 24 years. Prudence worked for Publisher's Weekly (New York City) 1942 to 1945, A.A. Wyn Publishers (New York City), 1946 to 1947, Pleasantville High School (Pleasantville, NY), 1961 to 1962; 1968 to 1972, St. Mary's Episcopal School, (Peekskill, NY), 1962 to 1966, Byram Hills High School, (Armonk, NY) 1972 to 1984. Prudence retired in 1984, followed by many years of substitute teaching. He education was: Elmwood School, Buffalo, NY, Buffalo Seminary High School, Buffalo, NY 1936, Vassar College, B.A. 1940, Manhattanville College, M.A. English and Education, 1972. War Service: American Red Cross, World War II; China, Burma and India; January, 1945 to May 1946. Prudence was a member of the following organizations: Nurse's Aide (1940 to 1945), Community Chest Executive Committee (Hartsdale, NY, 1948 to 1949), Vassar College Scholarship Board (Westchester, NY, 1950 to 1955), PTA Newsletter (Chappaqua, NY, 1965 to 1967), Sheriff's County Jail, Womens Department (Westchester, NY, 1966 to 1970), Heritage Hills Condo Association, (Westchester, NY, 1977 to 2006; numerous positions), Twig Thrift Shop, Mount Kisco, NY (to 2006), Chappaqua Book Club (to 2006), Heritage Hills Bowling League (until she couldn't throw). She will be remembered for: Her commitment to her church (Bedford Presbyterian; Chappaqua Congregational Church) - faith, time and support. Her unceasing donation of time (and financial support) to charities - teaching in women's prisons; tutoring struggling students for SAT's; yearly donations to over thirty charities, the list could go on. Her knitting skills - lost to current generations (intricate sweaters could emerge from a black movie theatre - and she watched the movie). Her highly competitive bridge playing - another lost skill. Her dedication to reading and discussion - she had a book by her bed at her last hospital stay. Prudence is survived by; daughter, Sarah P. Hodge, Buffalo, NY, son Kenyon B. Hodge, Dover, MA, six grandchildren; Rebecca Albrecht, Phoenix, AZ, Matthew Albrecht, Buffalo, NY, Joshua Albrecht, Buffalo, NY, Emily Hodge, Boston, MA, Lydia Hodge, Boston, MA, Adeline Hodge, Hadley, MA. Family members previously deceased; Husband, Edward A. Hodge, deceased March 13, 1974; they were married on May 17, 1947. Sister, Josephine Wheeler, deceased May 8, 1994. Brother, Thomas S. Hemenway, deceased April 7, 2000. Brother, Brewster Roe Hemenway, deceased September 24, 2002. Memorial Service: Bedford Presbyterian Church, On the Village Green (44 Village Green), Bedford, NY 10506 (914) 234-3672, Saturday, June 3, 2006, 3:00 PM. Church reception to follow. Interment: To be held with family at Fair Ridge Cemetery, Chappaqua, New York, where Mrs. Hodge's husband is buried. Contributions in memory of Prudence H.
