Born Patrick Fitzgerald in Ireland and immigrating with his parents and siblings to St. Clair County, Michigan in 1837, he eventually became a Great Lakes sailor and ship captain. After moving to Milwaukee in the 1850s, Capt. Robert Patrick Fitzgerald worked onshore as a vessel agent, ship owner, and marine insurance agent. Robert was quite successful in business and left an estate that was vast and complicated, with investments in ships and other endeavors, enough to require well over a decade of legal wrangling before it was settled. On the other hand, only his wife, Emma, and one of his eleven children survived his passing in 1900. Two granddaughters were also beneficiaries. His oldest brother Edmond was a shipbuilder in Port Huron and his youngest brother John was a shipbuilder in Milwaukee. Three other brothers (Thomas, Michael and Phillip) sailed the lakes, all six brothers becoming lake captains.
