Howard Groat takes his life by inhaling gas

Returned from walk goes to kitchen where he inert tube in mouth; Out of work an ill; Nervous breakdown compelled giving up position as buyer

J. Howard Groat, 57, Syracuse salesman and former buyer for the Bacon Chappell company, ended his life in his apartment at the Blair, 114 Seymour street, early this morning, by inhaling illuminating gas.
Frank C. Thurwachter, a neighbor, found Mr. Groat on a cot in the kitchen of hi home with a gas tube in his mouth, at 2 o'clock. Mrs. Groat had noticed a faint odor of gas from her bedroom and called Mr. Thurwachter. He tried to break down one of two doors leading into the room but failed. A third door was unlocked. The cracks of the doors had been stuffed with paper and cloth.
Mr. Groat had been nervous and suffered --- of melancholia from being out of work. Five years ago he had a nervous breakdown and was forced to give up hi position with the Bacon-Chappell company. After recovery he was employed by the Brown-Lipe Gear company, in the shipping room. He had been out of work for three months. Physicians advised him to go to a sanatorium but he refused.
He went out for a walk a was his custom, before retiring Sunday night and id not return home until after midnight. He went into the kitchen where he made all arrangement for ending his life a short time later. His custom was to sleep on a divan in his sitting room.
Mr. Groat feared losing his mind and had made threats to 'end everything', his wife said.
Coroner Crane gave a decision of suicide and the body was removed to the rooms of W.A. Fancher, undertaken, where the funeral will take place.
Mr. Groat's son, Ellery Groat, died in the medical service of the army, at New York during the war. He leaves besides his wife, another son, Romaine R. Groat of Washington, D.C.
