The memorial service for Harley A. Karlen, of Hecla, SD, will be held Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hecla, SD. A prayer service will be held on Friday at 7:30 p.m. also at the church. Burial will be at the Hecla City Cemetery with military rites.

Harley Allen Karlen was born December 4, 1920 on a farm between Hecla and Frederick, South Dakota to Emil and Jennie (Ruchti) Karlen. He was baptized at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Hecla, and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hecla. Harley attended grade school in Greenfield Township and Columbia High School. He graduated from Aircraft Technical School, Englewood, California, and then worked at Consolidated Aircraft, San Diego, California. On May 12, 1942, he entered the United States Marine Corps, and served his country in the Pacific area, and Midway and Johnson Islands for 2½ years. Harley was honorably discharged on May 13, 1946. He also had Military Police duty at Puget Sound Navy Yard for 1½ years.

Harley was united in marriage to Leona Herther November 12, 1944. They made their home in Hecla, where Harley was a Standard Oil Bulk Agent for 31 years, retiring in 1977. After retirement, Harley and Leona spent winters in Mesa, Arizona and summers at Hecla and their cabin on Clear Lake. He loved spending time at the lake and fishing on the Missouri River. Harley was a golfer and he enjoyed watching sports; especially “Twins” baseball, “Vikings” football and “Suns” basketball. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the American Legion.

At 88 years of age, Harley passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Banner Baywood Medical Center, Mesa, Arizona.

He is survived by his wife, Leona; three children, Kathlyn (David) Thoreson, Nashville, TN, Thomas (Susan) Karlen, Rapid City, SD, and Laurel (Mark) Smith, Tucson, AZ; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Harley was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Walt, Art, Gilbert, Rudy, and Paul, and three sisters, Florence Rathert, Alice Stolle, and Irene Krage.
