James Totten
Birth: 1817
Death: 1871

Civil War Union Brigadier General. He was graduated at the US Military Academy in 1841, as a 1st lieutenant and engaged in the Florida war against the Seminole Indians in 1849 and 1850. At the start of the Civil War, he was a Major in command of the Little Rock, Arkansas arsenal in February, 1861 and was compelled to evacuate the post by a superior Confederate force. He served under Generals Nathaniel Lyon and John C. Fremont in operations in Missouri as chief of artillery and was promoted Lieutenant Colonel. In February, 1862, he became Brigadier General of the Missouri Militia, in command of the central district of the state. He then engaged in several actions on the frontier and became Inspector General, Chief of Artillery in 1864. He served at the siege of Mobile,
Alabama, was Inspector General of the Military division of the Atlantic in August, 1865 and retired from actice service as Assistant Inspector General in 1870. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
