Greater London, England
Born "3I5 m. 1. Pantludw (L. Ruck, Esq.), in whose grounds is a magnificent y(;w-tree, 32 ft. in girth." near Machynlleth.
First wife of Francis Darwin, a son of Charles Darwin; daughter of Lawrence Ruck of Machynlleth, and Newington, Kent and Mary Anne Matthews.
"Frank married and brought his charming young Welsh bride, Amy Ruck, ... had been schoolfriends of Amy's brothers, and had visited her family at Pantlladw." (qv Edna Healey, 2001)
Amy Richenda Darwin (nee Ruck) is buried in Pennal, North Wales; the precise location of her grave is subject to final confirmation, but it may be "Pantlladw" in Welsh? "In her letters to him she slips easily into Welsh; Pantlladw was paradise, her home a 'tiny grey house set on a little plateau carved out of a hill side'." (qv Edna Healey, 2001).
According to a letter written by Charles Darwin to his close friend, Joseph Dalton Hooker: " I never saw anyone suffer so much as poor Frank. He has gone to N. Wales to bury the body in a little church-yard amongst the mountains".
Her son Bernard (1876 - 1961) is buried at St Mary the Virgin Churchyard, Downe, as is his wife Elinor Monsell, who taught her husband's cousin Gwen Raverat engraving; nearby is Down House, the home of the Darwin family, where Amy died. Other Darwins buried at Downe include: Charles Waring Darwin; Elizabeth Darwin; Emma Darwin, Charles Darwin's wife, Erasmus Alvey Darwin; Mary Eleanor Darwin; Henrietta Etty Darwin, later Litchfield - her husband is buried in Cannes, France.
THE SECOND WIFE OF SIR FRANCIS DARWIN: ELLEN WORDSWORTH DARWIN, NEE CROFTS, IS BURIED IN THE CHURCHYARD OF ST. ANDREW'S CHURCH, GIRTON, CAMBRIDGESHIRE.
