Services were scheduled for this afternoon for Brown County native Garis E. Penrose. Mr. Penrose, 66, died Saturday, June 2, 1990, at his home in Columbus. The Reverend George Henderson is to conduct a funeral at 2 p.m. today in the Myers Funeral Service Reed and Jewell Chapel in Columbus. Military graveside services and burial will be in that city's Garland Brook Cemetery.
Mr. Penrose was born August 14, 1923, in Brown County, to Sylvanus and Melissa Hatton Penrose. He married Thelma Helen Chesser July 30, 1961, and she died October 13, 1983. A World War II Navy veteran, Mr. Penrose was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Redman's Lodge. He worked for Cummins Engine Company for 25 years, retiring from the Engine Test Department in 1985.
Survivors include a brother, William S. Penrose of Columbus; six sisters, Geneva Holder of Sebring, Florida, Jean Acton of Norman, Ida Hale of Cambridge City and Esther White, Dorothy Coffman and Linda Carmer of Columbus; a step-daughter, Barbara Woodson of Ohio; a step-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. Four brothers -- Lloyd L., A. Gerald, Lesley R. and Donald E. Penrose -- preceded him in death.
From his marriage records it appears that he was married about 4 times. His first marriage ended in July 1945 in New York, wife unnamed. His second marriage was annulled July 11, 1946 in California. He married third to Mrs. Alma M. (Neal) Stroup on July 3, 1947. In 1947 he had one son: Garis Edgar Penrose, Jr. age 4. So, his fourth wife was Thelma Helen Chesser.
