Student also dies Carterville pilot killed in crash
Air Force Capt. William H. Nelson, II, 28, of 557 N. Division St., Carterville, was killed Wednesday when his F4 jet crashed about 105 miles northwest of Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, Nev.
Capt. Nelson was an instructor pilot. His student pilot, Capt. Richard F. Mucciano of St. Petersburg, Fla., also died in the crash.
Base officials said the crash occurred in a remote area of the Nellis bombing and gunnery range during a night ground attack training mission.
Capt. Nelson was born Feb. 11, 1944 at Orlando, Fla., the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Nelson of Carterville.
He was graduated,from Gosnell High .School at Blytheville, Ark. and received a college degree from Florida State University at Tallahassee, Fla. He joined the Air Force in July, 1965.
Capt. Nelson is survived by his parents; a sister, Mrs, Mary Lee Beal of Starksville, Miss., and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. N. B. Nelson of De Land, Fla.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Mo. There will be no services in Carterville. In lieu of flowers friends are asked to send donations to the POW Missing In Action Committee, BOX 555, Scott Air Force Base, Ill., 62225.
