DEATH NEWTON TOWNSHIP CALHOUN CO MI

Father: John Rea [1794-1873] b. Scotland
Mother: Ann Anderson b. Scotland
John Rea (1794-1873) immigrated to America with his wife and children in 1831
It lists John Rea (born 1794) marrying 18 Jun 1848 NY to Ann. This makes me think that Ann was not the mother of the children or that he also had a 1st wife named Ann. What do you think? I Aree. FBW

Siblings are: 1.)Agnes,2.)James ,3.)Mary Jane

1.)John married 13 Feb 1855 Mary Jane Akey; [?-10/1861]
2.)John Married Hannah Houston.[1842-6/4/1892]

Obituary

Here is John's obituary from the Ogdensburg Advance in St. Lawrence county where he was from. I think it clears up some of the questions you have on his memorial.

John Rea -
John Rea was born on December 21, 1828, and resided with his parents on their farm till he was 19, when he went to Heuvelton and spent three years learning the furniture business. They made furniture by hand from the log in those days. He then bought out the business, which he conducted for 48 years. Feb 13, 1855 he married Mary Jane Ekey of Lisbon. Two sons were born, William and Robert, the latter dying when 5 months old. Will married and moved to Syracuse.

Mrs. Rea died and in October 1861 Mr. Rea married Hannah Houston of Lisbon, cousin of Henry Houston of Ogdensburg. One daughter was born.

Mr. and Mrs. Rea were members of the reformed Presbyterian Church of Lisbon, earnest, active Christians. Twelve years ago he had read the Bible through seven times. It was his constant companion.

In 1889 he removed to Lisbon Center, where he continued to carry on the furniture business, during which time he sustained a fall that caused internal injuries. June 4, 1892, his second wife died, and in 1898, owing to poor health, he sold out and went to reside with his brother James Rea, 4 1/2 miles from Ogdensburg. In March, 1901, he went to Syracuse and visited his son till May 1st when he went to Ceresco, Mich to see his daughter, Mrs. L. C. Coller.

Although so weak and feeble, he took two walks a day before he died and attended church the Sunday before. The end came Friday night at 11:10, Feb 21, 1902. He was conscious till the last, said he was not afraid to die, repeated twice what Paul said, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith;", selected Rev 14:18 as his funeral text. All pain gone, he folded his hands and died without a struggle. Remains were interred in Newton Cemetery, Rev. King of Ceresco conducting the funeral services. It can be said of him as of some others, truly a good old Christian has gone to his grave.

Family information to keep.

John Rea (1794 Ireland - 20 Oct 1873 Oswegatchie, NY)
Ann Anderson Rea (1799 Ireland - 19 Apr 1879 Oswegatchie, NY) - wife
Agnes Rea (29 Oct 1821 Ireland - 20 Nov 1889 Oswegatchie, NY) - daughter
James Rea (1825 NY - 1902 Oswegatchie, NY) - son
Hannah ???? Rea (1837-1901 NY) - daughter-in-law, wife of son James
John Rae (1829 NY - 21 Feb 1902 Newton, MI) - son [John Rea died in 1902 - perhaps at his daughter's?]
Hannah Houston Rea (1842 - 1892 Oswegatchie, NY) - daughter-in-law, wife of son John
Mary Jane Rea (1832 NY - 02 Oct 1874 Oswegatchie, NY) - daughter

Mary Jane Rea - this grave has no dates - it has a note "wife of John Rae Sr."

This family is in 1850, 1860 Federal Censuses at Lisbon, St. Lawrence, NY:
William Rea (1799 Ireland - 1861 Lisbon, NY)
Jane ???? Rea (1803 Ireland - 1876 NY) wife
Mary Rea (1830 NY - ????) - daughter
Agnes Rea (1831 NY - 1874 NY) - daughter [Note: wife of William Woodside]
Joseph Rea (1834 NY - 1868 NY) - son
Hannah Rea (1838 NY - ???) - daughter
William Rea (1840 NY - 1862) - son [Note: GAR]
Hugh Rea (1844 NY - ???) - son
Elnor Rea (1846-1849) - daughter [This is total speculation]

The only other Rea buried at Flackville Cemetery is:
Robert Rea (???? - 13 Dec 1853) -- He doesn't appear to be a child of John Rea (1794-1873) or of William Rea (1799-1861). He isn't listed with any of this family in the 1850 Federal Census. This makes me think he may have been born after 1850 and then died in 1853. William Rea's son Joseph married Martha and in the 1860 Federal Census they had William Rea (born 1856) and Joseph Rea (born 1859) - perhaps Joseph and Martha had a baby Robert in 1853 who didn't live? A lot of speculation, to be sure!

Family information from Janice Dated 8/29/2013

John Rea 1829-1902
THANKS! You provide good family information at John Rea 1829-1902 memorial 102724078.

There is a family Bible that this family kept. I have not seen it, but information from it has been shared with me that I would like to share with you. Some of it generates more questions.

John Rea (1794-1873) immigrated to America with his wife and children in 1831:

William born 04 Sep 1819 Ireland; married (no name) 14 Jun 1848; died 21 Sep 1853 (no place).

Agnes born 29 Oct 1821 Ireland; died 30 Nov 1889 Oswegotchie, NY; buried Flackville Cemetery

Mary Jane born 17 Oct 1823 Ireland; died 18 Mar 1824 Ireland

James born Feb 1825 Ireland; married 1858 to Hannah

John born 1829 Ireland; married 13 Feb 1855 Mary Akey; had William 09 Sep 1857 NY; wife Mary died 07 OCt 1860 NY; married 10 Oct 1861 Hannah Houston; had Mary Emma "Minnie" 02 Jun 1862 NY; died 21 Feb 1902 Newton, MI; buried Newton Township Cemetery

This child was born in NY:
Mary Jane born 1832 NY; died 02 Oct 1874 Oswegatchie, NY; buried Flackville Cemetery

It lists John Rea (born 1794) marrying 18 Jun 1848 NY to Ann. This makes me think that Ann was not the mother of the children or that he also had a 1st wife named Ann. What do you think?

Just wanted to share - Janice
