*American Heart Assn.∼Ruth V. "Bitter" Kowalewski, 87, Holloway, died Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at her home.
She was born in Bellaire on November 29, 1925, a daughter of the late John and Ernestine Mount Mason.
A member of St.Paul's Catholic Church, Flushing, she was a graduate of Holloway High School and retired as Postmaster of the Holloway Post Office after 33 years of service. She was a member of Flushing Senior Citizens, St. Paul's Catholic Women's Club, NARFE the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, 439'ers, Belmont County Red Hats, Holloway Old Timers and the Cravat Coal Co. Bowling Team.
A loving Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, Ruth was an active member of her community. Her community service included establishing a lending library in the Holloway Post Office and forming the Sticky Stampers stamp club for children of the Holloway area. She also initiated the annual St. Judes Bike-a-thon to raise awareness/funds for St. Jude's Children's Hospital and lead the annual drive for the American Heart Association for many years. In addition, she was an avid supporter of the Holloway Old Timers Association. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was her husband Kiser in 1995, her brother John Mason; three sisters, Dorothy Mason, Elizabeth Dickerson, and June Vawter. Surviving are two daughters, Kristine Merritt of Cincinnati and Debra Blake of Holloway; her sister Margaret Diosi of Zanesville and special sister in law Florence Delbridge of Maynard; eight grandchildren: John Thomas Merritt III, Melissa Merritt, Rebecca Merritt, Matthew Merritt, Darcy Porter, Casmir Blake, Daniel Blake and Kevin Blake; thirteen great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at Warren Funeral Home, Flushing, Friday from noon to 4 and 5 to 9. Pastor Robert Merritt and Rev. Fred Kihm will conduct a service Friday at 3:00pm at the funeral home. Funeral Liturgy with mass will be held at St.Paul's Catholic Church, Flushing, on Saturday at 11:00am with Rev. Fred Kihm the celebrant. Burial will follow in Rock Hill Cemetery, Flushing.
