Paul T. J. Hayes was born January 14, 1924 in Maquoketa, Iowa, the son of Lewis E. and Julia C. (Manwiller) Hayes. He graduated from Maquoketa High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He married Geraldine R. "Geri" Schunter on September 1, 1946 in Maquoketa, Iowa. Paul was a meat cutter for Manning Meat Market, he had also worked at Clinton Engines, Coast to Coast Hardware Store and Kendalls Menswear, Maquoketa, for many years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Maquoketa, a longtime member of Timber City American Legion Post #75, Maquoketa, a past member of the Izaak Walton League and National Rifle Association for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Geri Hayes of Maquoketa; one daughter, Deborah "Debbie" (Glen) Gottschalk of Burlington; one son, Mark (Debra) Hayes of Bettendorf; 4 grandchildren, Caroline (Jeffrey) Stout, Rachel (Peter) Rugg, Michael Hayes and Angela Hayes; and two great grandchildren, Catherine and Elizabeth Stout. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and four brothers.
