Durning, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Silver Star and three Purple Hearts, began his acting career in his late forties when he was cast in guest appearances in early 1960's television shows where he played minor roles over the next decade until he gained notice on film as a sneering, corrupt cop in the multi award winning mega-hit 'The Sting' (1973). Twice nominated for a supporting actor Academy Award, among films he appeared in were 'Dog Day Afternoon' (1975), 'The Choirboys' (1977), 'North Dallas Forty' (1979), The Muppet Movie' (1979), 'Tootsie' (1982), 'The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas' (1982), 'To Be Or Not To Be' (1983), 'Stand Alone' (1985), 'Cop' (1988), 'Dick Tracy' (1990), 'The Hudsucker Proxy' (1994), 'One Fine Day' (1996), 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' (2000), 'Dead Canaries' (2003), 'River's End' (2005), 'The Golden Boys' (2008), 'Naked Run' (2011) and 'Amazing Racer' (2011). Among TV shows the multi Emmy nominated actor appeared in were 'N.Y.P.D.', 'Another World', 'All in the Family', 'Baretta', 'Hawaii Five-O', 'Evening Shade', 'Orleans', 'Homicide: Life on the Street', 'The Practice', 'Arli$$', 'Everybody Loves Raymond', 'Touched by an Angel', 'Everwood', 'Family Guy' and 'Rescue Me'. He won a Golden Globe as best supporting TV actor in 1991 for his portrayal of John "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald in the TV film 'The Kennedys of Massachusetts'. On stage, he won a Tony award for his portrayal of Big Daddy in 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' in 1990. Durning, who was honored with the Life Achievement Award at the 14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Award in 2008, died of natural causes. (bio by: Louis Mata)
