He was born as Mannes Kammerman in the eastern part of the Netherlands, close to the German border. His parents are farmer Jan Kamerman and Teuntje Goldenbeld.
The 31 years aged day laborer Mannes Kamerman married on 16 April 1870 in the town of Hellendoorn in the Dutch province Overijssel, not faraway from Germany, to the 9 years younger maid Geziena Christina Cramer.
On 23 June 1870 their son Hermannus died, only five days aged, at Lemelerveld, mun. Ambt Ommen, province Overijssel.
The couple emigrated between January 1879 and August 1881 to the Dutch settlement Overisel, Allegan County, in the western part of Michigan, USA. On 19 August 1881 their son Johannes (John) was born there. On 16 April 1883 their daughter Gesiena Kamerman, born on 6 January 1879 at Raalte, in the Dutch province Overijssel, died at the age of 4 years at Overisel. In August 1883 their son Lambertus (Bert) was born there and in May 1887 their daughter Geziena Christina.
In 1900 the 62 years aged Herman Kamerman lived with his wife Zeanie (53 y) and their children John (18), Lambert (16) and Zeanie (13) at Olive Township, Allegan County, in the "Dutch Belt" of western Michigan.
