He was the son of Isaac & Talitha (Cloud) Cantrell.

He married Margaret Saunders, about 1788, North Carolina.

He and his brother, Ben, may have been the first of the Cantrell family to settle in the Spartanburg district of South Carolina. He was recorded on every census 1790 through 1830 here.

He prepared his Will in January of 1838 and it was filed for probate the same month.

I, James Cantrell of South Carolina, Spartanburg County, do make this my last will and testament, first that my body be decently buried, that all my just debts be paid.

I do bequeath all my real and personal estate to my loving wife, Peggy Cantrell, except one bay mare. I bequeath to Joseph Glen, if he stays out his time. I also bequeath to Elizabeth Glen one cow and calf. also one bed and furniture.
At my wifes death, my estate be equally divided amongst my children except Rebecca Robins, I bequeath her five dollars and the rest of my estate to my children: John Cantrell, Nancy Turner, Sally Ezell, Henry Cantrell, Aaron Cantrell, James Cantrell, Peggy Cantrell, Elizabeth Cooley, Zibeon Cantrell.

I appoint my wife, Peggy Cantrell, and James Ezell my executors.

It is believed by most Cantrell researchers that you were buried on your own land. This Cemetery was called the Cantrell cemetery until recent years.
