Mike McKinley Reid was born September 29, 1940 in Fairfax, Oklahoma to Billie James (Corbett) and Walker Blackbird McKinley. He was baptized as Michael Stanley McKinley. He passed away December 17, 2012 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 72 years, 2 months and 18 days.
Mike's father was killed in World War II. He moved to Hillsboro, New Mexico to live with his grandma in 1947. Mike's mother soon followed and married a local rancher, Don Reid, who adopted him. He grew up on ranches on the Black Range of southwest New Mexico. Mike graduated from Hot Springs High School in Truth or Consequence, New Mexico in 1960.
He served his country during the Vietnam Conflict as a jet engine mechanic from 1960 to 1965 in California. He was married to Freda Lea Teston in Truth or Consrequence and to that union was born, Michael, Chris, Shawn and Nicole. Mike moved to Kayenta, Arizona where he was a foreman for Peabody Coal. He was married to Virginia Sue (Flesher) at Kayenta on March 24, 1972. To that union was born Robin Lynn. They lived in northern Arizona for 31 years befe moving to Elk City in 2004 for their retirement. Mike was a proud member of the Osage Nation. He was currently a member of the Gray Horse Committee and the Osage Gourd Clan. Mike and Virginia traveled throughout the world. He was looking forward to making the trip with the Elk City High School Band to San Diego after Christmas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, Charlene Vance, and 1 nephew, Mikel Travis Vance.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia, 3 sons, Michael James Reid, Las Cruce, NM; and Christopher Lee Reid and wife Sawna, Aztec, NM; and Shawn Darin Reid, Aztec, NM and Robin Lynn Marguis, Elk City, OK.
12 grandchildren, Jacob Daniel Reid and wife, Jenna, and Molly Katherine Reid, and Cori Nicole Reid, and Chantal Villecas, and Mitchell Stanley Reid, and Bradley Lane Martin, and Bonmie Leigh Reid, and Chelsie Rai Reid, and McKinzie Lane Reid, and Tarryn-Jade Orion Marquis, and Sara Beth Reid, ad Shelby-Ann Canyon Marquis, 3 great grandchildren, Jesse Winkel, and Elijah Winkel, and Samantha Reid, His mother-in-law, Gertrude Flesher Cheyenne, OK; His brother-in-law, Jim Flesher and wife, Beverly, Stillwater, OK; and a host of other relatives and friends.
There will be a service at the Gray Horse Chapel in Fairfax, Oklahoma on Thusday, December 20, 2012 at 12;00 at 12:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held December 22, 2012 at 9;00 am at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Elk City, Oklahoma oficiated by Father Lourdu Ponnapati. Burial will be at White Rose Cemetery, Reydon, OK under the direction of Whinery-Savage Funeral Service.
