Author. The first woman known to earned a living by writing. Her best known play is 'the Rover' and her best-known novel 'Oroonoko' , claimed to be 'the first philosophical novel in English'. Spied for England during the Dutch Wars of 1675-1677, after which her poverty (which led her to the debtor's prison) drove her to writing.
