Robert L. Crandell, 85, of Moorefield, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at his residence.
He was born June 24, 1926, in Moorefield, the son of Glenn Rouse and Margaret R. Storie Crandell. He was raised in Moorefield and resided there all of his life. He became a member of the Long Run Baptist Church, near Moorefield, on Aug. 15, 1941. He was a dairy farmer and raised beef cattle, tobacco, corn, wheat and hay. He was a former employee of Berry Materials in Versailles from 1975 to 1985. He also had his own dump truck and hauled lime for many years for farmers. He was a former chief of the Moorefield Community Fire Department for 40 years. He had been a member of the Moorefield Community Fire Department for 75 years and was the longest tenured volunteer member of a volunteer fire department in Indiana. He was the Indiana representative for the Burley Tobacco Council for Kentucky, raising funds for tobacco improvement. He was a former member of the Switzerland County Zoning Board and a former school bus driver for the Switzerland County School Corporation. He enjoyed farming, horses and the companionship of his dog.
He is survived by his wife, Marietta Chase Crandell, whom he married Dec. 23, 1973; one daughter, Bonnie Colen of Canaan; one son, Denny Crandell of Moorefield; one step-daughter; two step-sons, including James Darrell Stevenson, who helped care for him; one brother, James Earl Crandell of Texas; four grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; four nephews; and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Carl Scott Crandell; and one sister Mary Louise Crandell.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial will be in Vevay Cemetery.
Friends may call the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. A fireman's service and walk through will be conducted by the Moorefield Community Fire Department at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Long Run Baptist Church or the Moorefield Community Fire Department. Contribution cards are available at the funeral home.
