US Political Figure. He served as US Acting Attorney General under President Richard Nixon (1973). His father was a steel company purchasing agent, his mother was a school teacher, he earned a bachelor of arts and law degree from the University of Chicago. Following graduation, he served with the United States Marine Corps and commenced practicing law privately, prior to taking the position of professor at the Yale Law School in 1962. Associated with the Republican Party, Bork was named US Solicitor General in 1972 and remained at that capacity until 1977. In what is perhaps one of the most bizarre chain of events in American political history, Bork was elevated to Acting Attorney General in October 1973, following the resignations of Elliott Richardson and William Ruckelshaus, when they refused President Nixon's order to fire Independent Prosecutor Archibald Cox, whom was investigating the Watergate Scandal. The incident would be referred to as the "Saturday Night Massacre". Bork's name would again come to national prominence in 1987, when President Reagan nominated him (Bork at that time was serving on the US Court of Appeals in Washington, DC) to the Supreme Court to fill the vacancy which would be left by the retiring Lewis Powell. The Senate rejected Bork's nomination with the Democrats citing Bork was too conservative in his views on issues, notably abortion rights. After retiring from the bench in 1988, he authored several books. He died of complications from a heart ailment. (bio by: C.S.)
