"Born August 18, 1926, to the late Ralph D. and Jeffie H. Allen, Dee graduated from Novice High School and joined the Navy. He served in the Pacific until the end of World War II before launching a career consisting of a multitude of jobs in a multitude of places, all with the common theme of touching lives. He is remembered for his quiet sense of humor as well as his kindness and compassion which was felt by everyone he met.
"Retirement was an active endeavor for Dee. Sitting down and being still was probably one of the few things he never mastered. After returning to Novice with his wife of 37 years, Mary Allen, they moved into his childhood home where he had lived on and off for 70 years. Together, with the help of nieces, nephews, and sisters living close by, they worked tirelessly in the yard and on the house, planting, picking, painting, fixing and mending until the last days of his life.
"He leaves to cherish their memories his wife, Mary; his daughter, Nancy Allen Hemphill of San Angelo and her husband John, step-daughter, Christine Huffman and her husband Dulyn of Gardendale, as well as his granddaughters, Tamea Hemphill Byrd and her husband Zach of Denver, Colorado, Caroline Hemphill Roesel and her husband Christopher of Austin, and grandsons, Lynn Miller and his wife Briana of Austin, and John Miller of Odessa. His brother, Milton Allen, and sisters, Nell Walthall and Doris Duke, know stories of their childhood together in Texas and California -- stories which will always include their late sister, Audrey Allen Green.
"Monday evening, when he realized his work was done and he had put in a full day, Dee was finally able to lie down, be still and fall asleep in the everlasting arms of his Lord.
"Funeral service for D. G. Allen will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 20 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, 400 W. Pecan, Coleman, with Rev. Matt Morton and Rev. George Frasier officiating. Burial will follow in the Rough Creek Cemetery near Novice, Texas."
