Dempsey William Fleming, 85, 2221 Elizabethton Highway, Johnson City, died Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Fleming was a native of Dickenson County, Va., and a son of the late Russell and Goldie Stanley Fleming. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lora Vanover Fleming, and his second wife, June Crowe Fleming.

Mr. Fleming was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II, and was a POW (Prisoner of War). He was a self-employed mechanic and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his daughter, Patricia Gillin, Johnson City; a stepdaughter, Terry Ferguson, Jonesborough; a stepson, Tony Young, Johnson City; six brothers, Everette Fleming and Cecil Fleming, both of Kingsport, Roy Fleming, Elizabethton, Logan Fleming, Jupiter, Fla., Willie Fleming and Irwin Fleming, both of Clintwood, Va.; four sisters, Zettie Keener, Johnson City, and Vonda Taylor, Dorothy Mullins and Linda Mullins, all of Clintwood, Va.; and five grandchildren, Wesley Shane Hughes, Robert Ferguson, Dale Ferguson, Greg Ferguson and Amy Young. Five great-grandchildren also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 13, in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. Reece Harris and Rev. Rex Johnson officiating. The graveside committal service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 14, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military Honors will be accorded by the Kingsport V.F.W. Post #3382. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery by the service time. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the East Parlor of the funeral home. Condolences may be made online at www.appalachianfuneralhome.com.
