Phoenix, Ariz. - Eugene Porter Smith, Phoenix, formerly of St. Joseph, passed away on May 17, 2003.
Mr. Smith was born on April 8, 1919 in Agency, Mo., and had been a resident of Phoenix since 1967. He was a veteran of WW II and served in the U.S. Navy on the destroyer USS Bennion as seaman 1st class. He received the Presidential Unit Citation, Victory Medal and seven Bronze Stars for his tour of duty in the Asia Pacific region, as well as several other acknowledgements for his service.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 65 years, Opal; seven children, Sue Camasta, Helen Radestock, Daryl P. Smith, Carroll P. Smith, Joy Collins, Candice Smith and Ginger Henderson; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.
A service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Newcomer Family Mortuary, 6812 E. Thomas Road, in Scottsdale, Ariz. Viewing is from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. No graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers, friends of the family may choose to make donations to the Disabled American Veterans.
