Earl S. Halaquist
SIDNEY - Earl "Satch" Halaquist, 75, of Sidney, ran his last race on Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, taking the checkered flag home to the Lord.
He was born Sept. 7, 1925, in Rock Rift, the son of the Late Stanley A. and Jennie Elderkin Halaquist.
Raised in Franklin, he graduated from the Delaware Literary Institute and Franklin Central School in 1943.
He served his country in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946.
A resident of Sidney since 1950, he worked for Bendix for 20 years and retired from Herlehey Air Freight Trucking og Binghamton in 1988.
His family, sprint car racing and golf were his life's passions. A six-time U.R.C. Sprint Car Champion, his love of going fast and driving on the edge made him a worthy contender both on the track and in life. Earl was an avid sportsman, with golf coming first, followed by softball and bowling.
He was a member of the Sidney Golf and Country Club, Charles L. Jacobi Post #183 American Legion, Sidney Lodge #2175 B.P.O.E., and St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney.
Hid first wife, Evelyn Pearson, predeceased him.
On Dec. 15, 1962, he married Patricia Hulbert in Deposit.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Patricia A. Halaquist, of Sidney; three daughters and a son-in-law, Elaine Halaquist of Stephen City, Va., Lee Jane Wheeler of Cold Brook and Nancy and Duane Lowe of Mount Upton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Karen Halaquist of Windsor, Dennis and Terri Halaquist of Unadilla, and Earl Jr. and Robin Halaquist of Bainbridge; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Philip and Sandra Halaquist of Punta Gorda, Fla., Robert and Anastasia Halaquist of Franklin and Peter Halaquist of Franklin; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. His in-laws, Irving and Ruth Greenburg of Deposit, as well as several brothers and sisters-in-law, survive him.
Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, from the C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, with the Rev. Michael Shank, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Sidney, officiating. Burial will be later in the Oakwood Cemetery, town of Deposit.
Friends are invited to call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.
