Major Robert P. Brooks, 83, of DeRidder, LA, went home to be with Jesus on Friday, December 14, 2012, Lake Charles, LA, after a 5 year battle with Alzheimer's disease.
"Bob" was born on July 12, 1929, in Yonkers, New York where he lived and was educated until he joined the Marine Corps at the age of 19. He served his country in Korea and two tours in Viet Nam. The Marine Corps was his home until he retired in 1970. He was meritoriously decorated with a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star, earning not only respect but the love of his men and superiors alike.
Always learning, Bob returned to school and obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Sociology and a Master and Doctoral Candidate in Criminal Justice. Bob began a second career as a Prison Warden in Missouri and then a Police Officer for the DeRidder Police Department. He volunteered for FINS/CASA as a Liaison/foster parent, served in teaching defensive driving courses and was very active in his church, St. Joseph' Parish in DeRidder as a Spiritual Director conducting retreats, teaching and blessing everyone he knew.
A third career was started as a College Professor at Northwestern University, inspiring student until he retired from teaching in 2007.
Bob was an influential and gracious man who will be sorely missed by everyone who met him. There was always a song or a laugh on his lips and open arms for anyone in need.
Bob is survived by his wife of 55 years of DeRidder, LA; brother of North Carolina; sister of Arlington, VA; daughter and husband of San Diego, CA; two sons and one daughter-in-law; nine grandchildren; great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and his faithful companion, a German Shepherd, Max.
Funeral services were Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, DeRidder, LA.
