| Birth: | Dec. 18, 1949 | | Death: | May 18, 1980 |  Volcanologist. USGS expert in the field of Cascade Volcanoes. He gained national media attention as a spokesman for the USGS, and was one of 57 known people killed during the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Washington State. He earned his professional degrees from the University of Illinois and the University of Washington in Seattle. Moments before his death, he shouted out his final transmission from near the mountain, "Vancouver!, Vancouver!, This is it!" In May 1997 the Johnston Ridge Observatory was dedicated in his honor, in the area formerly known as Coldwater Ridge. (bio by: Nils M. Solsvik Jr.)
