Max M. White Jr., age 85, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Ainsworth, died Friday, December 14, 2012 at the United Presbyterian Home following a lengthy illness.

Celebration of life services will be held 1:00 p.m. Sunday, December 16, 2012 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Wollenberg and Rev. Bruce White officiating. Visitation will begin noon Saturday, December 15th at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 2:00 5:00 p.m. Saturday. Interment will take place at the Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth with military honors conducted by Ainsworth American Legion Post 351 and Washington American Legion Post 29. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Hospice of Washington County or Wounded Warrior Project ( Online condolences may be sent for Max's family through the web at

Max was born on November 9, 1927 in Washington, IA to Max M. and Aileen Shriver. White and graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1945. After joining the U.S. Army, he served at Walter Reed Hospital. He married Dorothy Tellin on July 28, 1950. He worked in the family trucking business until his retirement in 1992.

Active in the Ainsworth community, he served as Town Clerk and as a volunteer firefighter and as a member of the Ainsworth School Board. He also was a member of the Ainsworth Lions Club and the Ainsworth Community Church.
Called up for the Korean Crisis in 1962, he was deployed to Ford Ord, CA. He rose to the rank of CWO4 in the Army Reserves, serving in the Cedar Rapids 301st Medical Field Hospital Detachment and 872nd Maintenance Company based in Washington over a period of 38 years, retiring in 1984.

Avid Iowa Hawkeye fans, Max and Dorothy followed the football team to many regular and post-season games. Max enjoyed travel, woodworking, stamp-collecting, and restoring his 1951 Willys army jeep. He was a man devoted to his family, community and country. Max and Dorothy wintered for many years in Mesa, AZ and moved to the United Presbyterian Home in 2010.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Washington, Iowa and three children, Bruce (Pam) of Tucson, AZ; Barbara (Fari) Barhamand of Naperville, IL and Brenda (Kent) Carter of Bethesda, MD. He has 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Owen (Norma) of Ainsworth and many nieces and nephews. Max was preceded in death by his parents.
