Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Ireland, he immigrated to America at age 21, where he working on the New York docks, when he enlisted in the US Navy at the start of the Civil War. On December 25, 1863, Landsman Charles Moore was a forward gunner serving on board the US Steam Gunboat Marblehead off Legareville, at the Stono River, South Carolina. As his boat approached John's Island, they were attacked by a Confederate shore battery. Wounded in the battle, Landsman Moore remained at his gun port until so exhausted by loss of blood that he had to be taken below. Through his effects, the engagement resulted in the enemy's abandonment of their positions, leaving an ammo caisson and one gun behind. For extraordinary heroism in action, he was awarded the Medal of Honor by General Orders No. 32 on April 16, 1864.
