Birth: 1748
Somerset County
Maryland, USA
Death: 1798
Stanly County
North Carolina, USA

Exact death date unknown, sources state it was prior to 1798.

"Joshua Hearne, son of Nehemiah and Bettie, born in Somerset Co., Maryland, 1748; removed to North Carolina to that part of Montgomery Co., that is now Stanly Co., and settled where the town of Albermarle now stands. He was drowned in the Pee Dee River, eight miles from Albermarle some time previous to 1798, and was buried at his home. His cousin Clement Hearne (grand father of the author of Hearne History), was with him and barely escaped death himself, ... " (above text taken from Brief History and Genealogy of The Hearne Family).

"Mrs G.B.D. Reynolds reported that an unmarked grave here (Hearne Burial Ground at Hearne Home) could be the grave of Davidson Hearne's Grandfather, Joshua or George Hearne, who drowned in the Uwharrie / Pee Dee River, although it could not be proved that the skeleton found and placed here was his."

"Before moving to Kentucky, Clement Hearne made a visit to North Carolina to look at the country with a view of emigrating there, as many of the Hearnes had already done. He visited kindred on the Yadkin river and also his cousin, Joshua Hearne (son of Nehemiah) at Albemarle. While there he and Joshua went out eight miles to the Pee Dee river, that was swollen very high from recent rains. They attempted to cross it in a canoe and in the effort the boat capsized and Joshua was drowned, and clement was only saved by the Lapel of his great coat hooking on a snag in some driftwood, that held him, with his head above water, till he was rescued."
