Mary was this author's 5th great-grandmother. Her husband Rufus Cleveland is a Revolutionary War Patriot recognized by the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Mary was the eldest daughter of Captain James and Abigail Boynton Chamberlain.

She was the first Wife of Corp. Rufus Cleveland (1754-1838).
They married September 9, 1779 in Ellington, CT.

The inscription on his headstone reads:
"In memory of Mrs. Mary Cleveland, wife of Rufus Cleveland, and daughter of Capt. James Chamberlain, who died Novem. 13, 1807, in the 49th year of her age."
