Birth: Jun. 23, 1838
Death: Oct. 3, 1896

October 17, 1896 - The True Citizen newspaper.

Mrs. W. C. Hillhouse, one of the best known and most beloved residents of upper Carolina, died at her residence 530 College Street yesterday morning at 7 o'clock, after ten days of actue but patient suffering from complication of troubles, beginning with bilios fever. The deceased was about 56 years of old at the time of death.
Mrs. Martha Ann Hillhouse was the daughter of James Steele a well to do farmer of Anderson county. She married Capt. W. C. Hillhouse at Mill Heights, that county, on April 6, 1857, and the young couple went to Pickens county and
established their residence near Mill Creek post office, where they lived for twelve years. They removed to Greenville a quarter of a century ago.
During her residence here, the deceased had been an active and most valued worker, and in every walk her life has been marked with noble Christian deeds. She leaves a large circle of very dear friends and a host of admiring
acquaintances to mourn her death.
A loving mother, a sincere friend, a devoted wife and a most admirable woman, her demise is felt by the whole community, which knew her so well and therefore admired and loved her so deeply.
The immediate family survivors are, her husband Capt. W. C. Hillhouse, three daughters, Mrs. Albert W. Anderson and Misses Mamie and EStelle Hillhouse, of this city, and a son W. C. Hillhouse, Jr., of Waynesboro, Ga. She was the only sister of the late J. Thomas Steele, of Atlanta, who died in that city about five weeks ago. Her other brothers, Charles and Henry, are residents of Canton,
Ga. her son is expected to arrive this morning.
The funeral will take place this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the First Presbyterian church, of which she was a devoted member. The elders and deacons of that church and Dr. John H. Maxwell and James H. Morgan have been selected as
pall bearers.
