Joseph Grigsby was the son of John Grigsby and Elizabeth Porter. He married Mary Ashley Warren Scott on 8 Dec 1812 in Botetourt Co., Virginia.

According to William H. Grigsby's Genealogy of the Grigsby Family, 1878 & republished by Robert Hall McCormick in 1905, Chicago: "TN, Dec, 1820, when returning from a visit to Missouri, died at the house of Mr. Sharp, near Winchester, Tenn. He was buried in the family graveyard of the Messrs. Sharp. A plain tomb of Tennessee marble incloses (sic) his grave."


Son, Andrew: After he resigned from military duty, he moved in with his sister's Goss family in Albemarle. He contracted pneumonia, dying 5 days later at age 77 on 23 Dec 1895. He was buried in the Goss family plot, 2 days later, on Christmas morning. Colonel Andrew Jackson Grigsby, by Isabelle H. Son, Lucian Porter was a private in Co. C, 1st Virginia Cavalry, born in Rockbridge Co., Virginia. He enlisted 18 Apr 1861 in Lexington. He was woulded in his leg in Bull Run on 21 Jul 1861. In 1870 he was a farmer in Natural Bridge, Virginia census. Sadly, in Oct 1893, he committed suicide in Mercer Co., WV. Brother of Andrew J and John W. Robert J Driver Jr.'s book the Confederat Soldiers of Rockbridge County, Virginia: A Roster, NC, 2016, p 113.


Joseph died in 1820. His widowed wife Mary married Benjamin F Porter (born "6 Mar 1790), the son of Abner Porter and Hanna Ingram and sister of Mrs. Verlinda A Porter Grigsby (wife of Reuben). Sadly, he was a slave owner, though may have been part of Mary's dowery. Seek data.


There are many listings in the Staunton, Virginia newspapers that mention Joseph Grigsby's heirs selling his father's former Fruit Hill tracts, from 1843 to 1844.


Benjamin F Porter, in right of his wife, who was the widow of JOSEPH Grigsby. Plus for sale were tracts of land and "a superior Piano belonging to Jas S Grigsby." Staunton Spectator & General Advertiser (Virginia) dated 5 Sep 1843 (see photo).


Sale of Land & Slaves in Rockbridge: Deed of trust made by Benj F Porter on 2 Feb 1843 to proceed on 9 Jul next at Fruit Hill, the present residence of Porter. Contains 3 separate tracts. 202 acres that Porter bought from Abner Grigsby. 82 acres Porter bought from Thos McCorkle and 40 acres bought by Porter (or McCorkle?) from Wm H Caruthers. All tracts adjoin Fruit Hill belonging to the heirs of the late JOSEPH Grigsby. 5 miles south of Lexington. Staunton Spectator & General Advertiser (Virginia) dated 20 Jun 1844.


Benj F Porter resided at Fruit Hill and was selling at auction, land purchased: of Abner Grigsby containing 202 acres; of Thos McCorkle containing 82 acres and o Wm H Caruthers containing 40 acres. These 3 tracts adjoin the Fruit Hill tract belonging to the heirs of Joseph Grigsby. The Trustees were Wm Taylor and James D Davidson and it was first advertised on 13 Jun 1844. Below this long article is a "Postponement" of the above sale by the creditors and parties concerned until 31 Jul 1844. In addition to the above property will be the Fruit Hill Tract, now belonging to the heirs of JOSEPH Grigsby, dec'd. It contains about 500 acres, by virtue of the deeds of trust made by James S and Andrew J Grigsby, will sell 1 undivided half of said "Fruit Hill." Staunton Spectator & General Advertiser (Virginia) dated 27 Jun 1844 (see photo). Note: James S and Andrew J were the sons of the late Joseph Grigsby.


The Grigsby Family Bible begins with "James Grigsby born 10 Nov 1748," includes siblings (thru 1761) John, Jr., Charles, Sally, and William, plus the children of John Sr.'s second wife Elizabeth Porter Grigsby (1766-1780): Ann, JOSEPH, born 6 (Janu)ary 1768, Jane, Rachel, Martha, Elisha, Elizabeth, Franky and Reuben. It also includes the children of James & Franky (Porter) Grigsby, 18 Sep 1770 to 18 Dec 1779. "Rachel Grigsby" is handwritten on the first page and Elisha Grigsby is printed on the next page. The old bible has hand written data and a typed transcription page of names with dates, of the same. The Grigsby Family Bible was presented to the Rockbridge County Historical Society on 28 Jul 1947 by J(ames) Granville Johnston (FaG #171756341, HTML is no longer working), from the Oxford Congregation, Rockbridge Co., Virginia, Film # 007769168, item 10, on Familysearch 103-106/759 (see photo on Rosanna Etchison Grigsby's site FaG #106280379).


His August 2021 photographed marker is in pretty good shape for about 201 years old.


A Joseph Grigsby, has a recorded estate inventory and appraisment in Rockbridge Co., Virginia will book 5, p 169-70, dated 8 Feb 1821. Mentions a Richard Sharp of Winchester, Tennefsee, the sum of $1,000. Another mention of Tennesee is listed.
