Mable Claire Miller Massey
Mable Claire Miller Massey of Augusta died Sunday, October 3, 2004, in Fredericksburg, Va. Visitation will be Friday, October 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home in McCrory. Grave side services will be held at the Augusta Memorial Park Cemetery Saturday, October 9, at 10 a.m. Memorial services will follow at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Augusta with Rev. Harold Chandler officiating.
Mrs. Massey was born in Augusta on May 11, 1907, the fourth child of Emma Olivia Robbins Miller and Charles Everett Miller. She graduated from Augusta High School in 1924. She married Vernon Newton Massey of Augusta on July 28, 1926. She and her husband, a pharmacist, remained life-long residents of Augusta, where they owned the Community Drug Store. She opened and operated a very popular luncheonette in the drug store in the early 1950's. She was the drug store bookkeeper for many years.
Mrs. Massey had a passion for her church and her community. She was a devoted member of Augusta First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, was a member of Women's Missionary Union and sang in the choir. She helped organize Fifty Plus, an organization for community seniors, was a frequent contributor to the Woodruff County Historical Society, worked as a volunteer in the Augusta Public Schools, the Woodruff County Library, and the Woodruff County Cancer Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon, in 1964, her daughter, Rosemary Garton, in 1986, son-in-law James Garton in 1998, her father, Charles Everett Miller in 1941, her mother, Emma Miller in 1976, four brothers, Charles Everett Miller, Jr., Elbert "Bing" Miller, Willard Miller, and Edwin Miller, two sisters, Thelma Henry and Eva Mae Williams. Survivors are one daughter, Lynda Bynum and husband James of Fredericksburg; two sisters, Minnie Lee Kruetzer of Huntington Beach, California and Elizabeth Jane Harrington of Ft. Worth, Texas; six grandchildren, Mary Nelle Wright of North Little Rock, Laura Garton Wiltshire of Little Rock, Paul Wade Garton of Augusta, John Vernon Garton of Batesville, Julia Bynum Dudley of Zebulon, NC, James Stuart Bynum, currently stationed at Atsugi Air Facility, Japan; and six great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Woodruff County Library in Augusta, Woodruff County Historical Society, First Baptist Church, Ouachita University, or the charity of their choice.
