DAVENPORT - George C. Monty, 59, of Davenport passed away Saturday, December 8, 2012, at the home of his good friend, Mark Patterson, in Birmingham, Iowa. Mark was providing hospice care for George, who was at the end of a struggle with cancer. The rite of cremation was accorded George by Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. A private family service was held and burial was in Davenport Memorial Park. A memorial service for George's friends and family is being planned for a later date.
George Charles Monty was born October 2, 1953, in Salina, Kansas, a son of George D. and Marie (Karber) Monty. The Monty family moved to Davenport in 1962 when Mr. Monty took a position as a professor in the Education Department at St. Ambrose College, Davenport. George loved sports and played Little League and Pony League baseball at the Northwest Park in Davenport. George was a 1971 graduate of Davenport West High, where he was a starting forward on the Falcons state championship basketball team. He was a 1989 graduate of St. Ambrose University receiving a degree in mass communications. He had always been an avid Hawkeyes fan.
He faced a lot of challenges in life, but he was a great storyteller, had a great sense of humor and a big heart. He will be truly missed by all who loved him.

Survivors include his mother, Marie, Davenport; his brother, Mark (Terry) Monty, Hamilton, N.Y.; nephew, Jeff (Janene) Monty; his sister, Diane Monty, Davenport; nephews and niece, Dan (Amy) Quartell, Sara Quartell, and Steven (Melissa) Quartell; his brother, Dave (Kimber) Monty, Davenport, nieces, Alyson (Ryan) Haglund, and Alexys Monty, and two great nephews and three great nieces; aunt, Joan Monty (Don) Weis, Westminister, Colo.; aunt, Regina Karber Kobuszewski, Hanover, Kan.; and many cousins and many wonderful friends.
George was preceded in death by his father.
