Born in 1687, he entered the Royal Navy in 1703, was commissioned an officer and was appointed Governor of Newfoundland in 1739, serving until 1740. He was promoted Rear Admiral of the White in 1744, Vice Admiral of the Blue Commander in Chief in the Mediterranean, in 1745 and Vice Admiral of the Red in 1747.
