ROCK ISLAND - Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Joyce K. Dreher, a resident of Rock Island, formerly of Davenport, will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2007, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will take place in Oakdale Memorial Gardens, Davenport. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home. The family invites you to join them for a prayer service at 4 p.m. to begin the visitation. Mrs. Dreher died Monday, May 21, 2007, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf. Joyce Katherine Day was born November 21, 1933, in Davenport, the daughter of Alexander and Ruth (Bliss) Day. She was united in marriage to Dale Schmahl. He preceded her in death in 1962. She was later united in marriage to John F. Dreher on December 29, 1987. They enjoyed almost 20 years of marriage together. After Mr. Schmahl's death, with two young girls at home, Joyce went back to school and earned a degree in elementary education. She began to teach Special Education in the Davenport Community School District. Joyce was instrumental in building Truman School and upon its opening, she was named its first principal. In later years, she also served as principal of Buffalo and Perry Schools. Throughout her career Joyce was dedicated to educating those with special needs, whether her capacity was as a teacher, coordinator, or principal. Memorials can be made to the Handicapped Development Center or to the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House. Survivors include her husband, John F. Dreher, Rock Island; daughters, Karen Peacock (Greg), Sherrard, Ill., and Sharon Schmahl, Shagrin Falls, Ohio; stepchildren, Jeffrey Dreher, Davenport, Christina Lum, Las Vegas, Nev., and Connie Smith, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and grandchildren, Katherine Powers, Aubrey Powers, Cam Powers, Shawn Peacock, and Myles Smith. Joyce was preceded in death by her first husband, Dale Schmahl, her parents, a stepson, John Michael Dreher, and a brother, Thomas Day. May they rest in peace.
