February 14, 1930 – December 2, 2012
Walter Leon Maughan, beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, teacher, and friend passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 2, 2012 surrounded by his family. He was 82 years old, but if you were to ask Walter, he would tell you he was 10! (8+2). Walter was perpetually young at heart with a fun sense of humor. At the time of his death, he was residing in American Fork, Utah in the loving care of our dear friends, Debbie and Steve Shepherd.
Walter was born in Madison, Wisconsin on Valentine's Day, February 14, 1930. His parents were J. Howard and Hattie Maughan. He grew up with his four siblings in Logan, Utah where he graduated from Logan High School. He was very active in the High School Writing Club.
Walter served a full-time mission in Uruguay which he absolutely loved. He talked about his mission until the day he died. He loved the people of Uruguay and he loved learning the Spanish language. Walter even discovered that he loved anchovy pizza while he was serving in Uruguay!
Walter returned home from his mission and was asked to substitute teach a youth Sunday School class and that is when he met his beloved wife, Shirley Alice Jensen. She brought the Sunday School attendance rolls that day, and they caught each other's eyes and the rest is history! Walter and Shirley were married and sealed for time and all eternity on December 21, 1953 in the Logan Utah Temple. Both Walter and Shirley loved the temple and served faithfully for many years in the Mount Timpanogos Temple.
Walter was a veteran and served in the United States Army right after the Korean War. He was in the Artillery Unit and was a clerk in the S2 Office. Walter graduated from Utah State University in Logan Utah with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and later received his Masters in Educational Psychology from Utah State. Walter loved learning and continued his education by working on his Doctorate Degree at Brigham Young University.
Walter was a teacher and he was very loved by all of his students and faculty. He taught Elementary Education in Wyoming and California, but his greatest love was teaching Special Education in the Alpine School District first at the Harrington School in American Fork in 1966 and then the Dan Peterson School. He retired around 1993 but continued to be a favorite substitute teacher.
Walter was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints his entire life and served faithfully in many callings. He served in several auxiliaries, did name extractions for Spanish names in the Family History Center, but his favorite calling was in the Primary Nursery. Walter and Shirley were missionaries for the Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program and they spent countless hours driving to the prison and jails to counsel and give help to individuals with the 12 step program of recovery.
Walter loved nature, loved fishing, and loved teaching his children about what plants and nuts they could eat to survive. He enjoyed reunions held at the family cabin in Logan Canyon and he loved music, especially classical music. He wrote several songs for his Special Needs students and beautiful poems for his children. Walter also wrote several novels including one about his amazing disabled daughter, Miel, who always had a very special place in his heart.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Alice Jensen Maughan, parents
J Howard and Hattie Maughan, sisters; Virginia Kammeyer and Mary Sargent and his brother, Howard Maughan. He is survived by his sister, Kathleen (Don) Lind, daughters Miel Maughan and Rebecca Davies, sons Paul (Cindy) Maughan and David (Susan) Maughan, 14 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are being arranged by Olpin Family Mortuary of Pleasant Grove and will be on Saturday, December 8th with a viewing from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to the services at 11:00 in the LDS Church located at 320 North 100 East, American Fork.
