Sgt Thomas Edward Rendle
Birth: Dec. 14, 1884
Death: Jun. 1, 1946

World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Bedminster Bristol, England, he served as a Bandsman Corporal in the 1st Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, British Army. In actions near Wulverghem, Belgium, on November 20, 1914, Bandsman Corporal Rendle attended to the wounded under very heavy German rifle and shell fire. He also rescued men from the trenches in which they had been buried from the blowing in of the parapets by the fire of the enemy's heavy howitzers. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Sergeant and awarded the Victoria Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace, on July 12, 1915. He died at age 61 in Groote Shuur Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
