1852 Petition to Sell Land of Philip Cripliver, dec'd: names heirs "..Daniel [or David - handwiting on all documents could be either name] McQuilling and James McQuilling infant children of Jacob McQuilling and grandchildren of said Philip Cripliver, deceased." (Lucas Co., Ohio Chancery Record Vol. 8, p. 369-371)
Elizabeth (Betsy) [Cripliver] McQuilling, dau/o Philip Cripliver, died before 1839. She possibly died giving birth to son, James, in Dec. 1836. Jacob McQuilling married Polly [Edelmann] Allen, Nov. 26, 1839. (Wood Co., OH Marr., Vol. 1-3, p. 102)
James J. McQuillin stated his age as 22 at Civil War Enlistment dated Apr. 24, 1862. According to the records above, his correct age was 25. His MN death record also gives his birth year as Dec. 25, 1839. The informant, Lucretia D. [Sutton]--his wife, knew Jacob's 3rd wife--Polly [Edelmann], but listed the mother as "unknown." Jacob and Polly [Edelmann] were married Nov. 26, 1839. Thus, James J. McQuillin was not the son of Polly [Edelmann], but of Elizabeth [Cripliver]. Throughout his life he believed himself to be 3 years younger than he actually was.
